One Leg, One Dream for Matt BetzoldSAN DIEGO, CA – One-Legged Fighter is trying to make MMA history.
Fighting is very familiar territory for Betzold, who's left leg was amputated at age 5 after consuming a piece of poisoned candy. As a result, Betzold began fighting to merely stay alive, which eventually served as the precursor to fighting in Mixed Martial Arts. After being taunted by kids in elementary school for having one leg, Betzold started fighting in an effort to defend himself from bullying. And then, after a few fights in the school yard, he had taken a liking to fighting and years later, at age 17, decided to train in Mixed Martial Arts. "That's how it all started", he said. "And now people use my story as inspiration and I think that's awesome." Betzold is already a nationally-known grappler, and in 2012 and 2013 he was a part of the USA FILA MMA team which took 1st Place at the FILA World Championships. He was also the only American fighter to win the gold medal on two separate occasions. |
